Editorial: Hurricane Ian promises an insurance storm

As I type, Hurricane Ian is bearing down on the west coast of Florida and looking likely to make landfall in the Port Charlotte area.

Having intensified to a category four storm – with winds of 155mph just a couple of miles per hour shy of category five status – it promises a bumpy ride for Florida and indeed Floridian insurers, having already wreaked havoc in Cuba where the Associated Press reported 11 million people were left without power.

Hundreds of thousands of Floridians faced mandatory evacuation orders earlier this week, with the storm posing a clear threat to life.
